Ah, updating PC's is so much fun

They have this ongoing project at work to upgrade everyones computers. I work for a large company with a footprint of 24 states plus some regular offices in some others. So this is not a small undertaking.

They stopped my my desk yesterday afternoon at 1:00 to start the upgrade to XP Pro and said this would take about 4 hours to install the new OS as well as all of the other software necessary for my job. I went home at 5:30 and it still wasn't done. I get to work this morning at 9:00 and guess what? It's still not completed. Apparently there was a program that wasn't supposed to be in the new image and they decided to take it out while that particular program was installing on my machine. Of course this caused the update to crash and they couldn't just restart it because that program was loaded into my profile.

Finally at 1:00, 24 hours after the 4 hour update started, they finally finished it and got my machine up and running. So then I spent a couple of more hours after that getting everything just the way I like it. Which means I had to put all of my shortcuts back on the desktop, even the ones like Excel, Word and IE. The only shortcuts that actually show up on the desktop after reimaging are the recycle bin and one of the programs we use.

Now my baby is working again and it's all sorts of happy with it's new image. And since I was one of the first in my area to have the upgrade, that means I get to help everyone else out when it's their turn. I couldn't be happier!
